During the Spring of 2014 I'll post notices here but eventually all activity will move to Facebook. Start time in Tijeras: 8am. For those who can't set up a car shuttle - consider running an out-and-back along the Crest Trail from Placitas at some point you'll run into the crossers.
North-end Trail head: Drive 5 miles east of I25 towards Placitas to the Tunnel Spring road then going south and up 1.5 miles till you get to the trail head parking.
South-end Trail head: I-40 to the Tijeras exit (as if going to Cedar Crest). Go right towards south 14 road then immediately turn left under the freeway. Drive north a half mile up through the Canyon Estates subdivision to get to the trail head.
dkcoblentz@yahoo.com or 505-695-4839 for further coordination.
Hope to see you on Sunday! David Coblentzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09788318967272659065noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1640150913839611368.post-14349298132384482812013-08-27T09:54:00.001-06:002013-08-27T09:54:26.664-06:00Get Over It results postedFrom Rhonda Claridge, RD:
The morning began with black, ominous clouds, and I thought the run was doomed, but we barely got sprinkled on, ran at times in the clouds, perfect temperatures, no lightning. The only mishap was that I and another fellow both slipped and fell in Bear Creek, the log bridge to La Junta having washed away. (So we did get wet.) We measured the distance and it was just shy of 20 miles.Steve Perohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233567281691642089noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1640150913839611368.post-42592734974251581972013-06-03T08:46:00.001-06:002013-06-03T08:46:37.463-06:00CancellationsDue to the Tres Lagunas fire, the Beyond Baldy run has been cancelled. The forest that we'd run through was closed on Friday. Deb and I attempted a Beyond Baldy on Friday and was turned back by the forest closure.

Due to the closing of the Sandia Mountains, the Watermelon Runs have also been cancelled.

Next Saturday is the Arriba! New Mexico run on Wheeler Peak.

If there are any other cancellations or updates, I will post them here.
New MexicoNext weekend is the Arriba! New Mexico run up in Taos, which goes up over Wheeler Peak. Just a reminder that we are doing a new route to avoid some private land that we used to run through. The link to the map can be found on the lower right of the blog. We are planning on starting at 9am due to the drive up from the Jemez, but anyone is free to do it on their own time and email me your time for the results.

Tomorrow Deb and I are heading up to the Sangres in Santa Fe to do the Beyond Baldy loop because we are going to be out of town on the 15th. Anyone is welcome to join us, might not get started until 9:30ish...and we go slow for Hardrock training so it will be mostly a hike.

That's it for now!
Some runs will go and there will possibly be some new ones.

I have added the Battleship Rock Marathon to the schedule.
This is a sweet, but tough all single track trail run starting and finishing at my house, with post run get together afterwards. Lots of trail, tons of climb, starting and finishing at 8200', dropping down to 6500' in the first 5 miles, but then turning around and climbing right back up. The majority of the run will be on the East Fork Trail #137 in the Jemez Mountains, to get the last 10K in, I'll take you up onto Cat Mesa for a loop back to the house. I have to see where I can fit this in the schedule and around the other races Deb and I are entered in.

The Arriba! New Mexico run in June up on Wheeler, will be a new course. Last year Deb and I were almost shot when following the original route and ended up on private property...we found a way to get around this land on a new and exiting route. You can see this new route on my MapMyRun page if you click on the link under maps on the right of the main web page.

Hope all is doing well with their training and we all have a fun year!

Until further notice, this will be the new route for this run. It is basically the same route, eliminating the private property section.
You basically go up Bull of the Woods trail to the ridge to Wheeler Peak, then take the hairpin turn back down off the ridge to the left to Horseshoe Lake, then following that trail to Lost Lake, continuing down to the river crossing, up to Middle Fork Lake. You then find a trail on the other side of a footbridge that I have been told is marked well enough. Follow this back up on the ridge and back down to Bull of the Woods trail to the parking lot.
The following link will bring you to a map where you can print it out or get the GPX file to put into your GPS device.
The route we did yesterday, this will change next year

Deb and I had a great rike (run/hike) yesterday in the Wheeler Peak wilderness area. Approx 22 miles, all incredible wilderness and stayed up above 13,000 feet for a good bit. We ran it in 7:15, while the day before Brian Murray ran a modified version (but slightly longer) in 5:50.
We had a run in with a private property owner that will change this route permanently, I'm thinking Brian's route might work.
Here is Brian's route http://connect.garmin.com/activity/189668677
I was told also that the Canyon De Valle trail section is still officially closed right now due to last summer's Las Conchas fire.

Hopefully these runs will be able to return next year (or later this year) as we venture out into the burn areas and see what condition they are in. Keep an eye on the schedule for changes.

Thanks,
Due to the Las Conchas fire there are some trees across the trail, but with the upcoming JMTR, these will be cleared and the Guaje Run can be run.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your patience!
Hopefully this will make it easier to see when and where the runs will be held.

The schedule is still early and unconfirmed by most of the run directors, but I will update the dates as they get confirmed or remove events if necessary. If anyone out there wants to add an event, let me know.

Thanks,
I'm thinking that the snow up on the mesas (San Juan and Cat) shouldn't be too bad and there will certainly be no snow in Ponderosa, the turnaround point.
Running it will be me, Deb and our friend Kevin, if anyone is interested in joining us, email me at ultrastevep@gmail.com so I know how much water to put at the turnaround tomorrow.

To learn any details of this run, look at previous posts in this blog.

Happy New Year! Let's hope we have a great MTNRNR schedule for 1012 and also have many runners show up!

Here is the official NWS forecast for our neck of the woods at 8200':

Saturday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. West wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

That sounds cold and wet, which means ice. The roads up here get pretty bad and the forecast is for possible snow Friday night, but also cold weather (mid 30's) and rain/snow for Saturday...I don't want to be responsible for anyone going over the edge of the road, dropping into the canyon. So our plan is to "not" purchase any food for the post run get together and if anyone does show up, well just have a fun run, which is typical of a MTNRNR event anyway. Maybe we can find a way to reschedule the event for a better weather slot in the summer next year. We attempted to have this run (Mesa to Mesa 50K) in 2006 and it was cancelled due to a 3 foot snowstorm several days before.

Thanks,
Same date, November 5th...same time, 8:00am.

Reason for change, there is a prescribed burn scheduled for up in the area where the M2M50K was planned to be run, so we had this backup run thought out just in case. The burn was supposed to begin on October 17th, but it hasn't yet, but could anyday and we can't wait. You certainly don't want to run in smoke, do you?

The Battleship Rock Trail Marathon will be much more enjoyed and was what we were planning for next year, but decided to go ahead with it this year. The BRTM is run on mostly single track trails with some dirt roads in the last 5 miles for those tired legs. The measured distance is 27.4 miles, but there will be 2 bailout options, one at approx. 8.5 miles and the other at approx. 18.5 miles.

The run begins at our house in the Sierra Los Pinos neighborhood in NE Jemez Springs. Our house sits at about 8150', the run goes up to 8638' and has over 5000' of gain in the marathon.

Starting at the house, you will run along some dirt roads for about a mile and will then hop on some single track trail onto Trail #137, which is the East Fork Trail. You will run to and through the Jemez Falls campground, down to Battleship Rock. Along the way you will go by the Macauley Warm springs. From the JF campground it drops down to BR on some steep single track with some small hills here and there. You'll then turn around (there will be someone there to check you in and provide aid) and run/hike back up the steep climb to the campground, run across the parking lot, following trail #137 across the Jemez River (yes, there's a bridge) back to where you entered it and someone will direct you to continue on the trail, which you will follow across Rte 4 down to Las Conchas trailhead on Rte 4. This is across the highway from where the Las Conchas fire started last August, but we will not be running into any of the burn area.
From there you run back the 5 miles to where you first entered trail #137 and will follow a series of dirt roads (FR135) to the Caldwell Trail, which is a steep hike up onto Cat Mesa. Up on Cat Mesa you will take a left and follow the dirt forest road to a cattle guard on your left, where you will join FR10 and run the switchbacks down the hill for about 1.5 miles. There you will take a left onto Ashley Lane to FR135 and back to the house.

Here are a couple of links to the route:
MapMyRun... http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/55692092/
or Dailymile... http://www.dailymile.com/routes/911962-running-route

From either of these you can download a GPX file for your GPS or print a map. I'll try to have some maps available and also some printed directions, but we'll try to mark the course with ribbon and flour arrows at critical turns we're not going to be at.

There will be a bottle of Ponderosa wine for the first male and first female finisher of the marathon. There will also be a post run gathering/BBQ. We will provide some unhealthy hamburgers and hot dogs, so if you are liking something a little better, bring it and I'll throw it on the grill for you. Also feel free to bring something to add on the table. We'll have the meat and some chips, Deb may make a salad if she gets the time...also bring what you like to drink. If you have too much of that, you are welcome to stay overnight...we have plenty of floorspace! We also have three showers, so bring your shower things and some clean clothes. Alos bring your camp chair if you want to sit out on the deck...

For directions from ABQ, come up Rte 550 to Rte 4 and drive up to just beyond MP33. (Be careful of the 2 speed traps, one in the Jemez Pueblo (30mph) and the other in Jemez Springs (25mph). Take a right onto FR10 down the hill to Hovenweep. Take a right and at the top of the hill after the road curves to the left, take a left onto Bonito Way. There is plenty of parking in our driveway, just swing over to the left.
Coming from the East just follow Rte 4 west until after MP34, you will see a 45MPH sign, then some mailboxes on the right, FR10 is across from those.
